A Shore Thing- A Sculpture Tribute to New Jersey Coast

Storm Sandy, Beach, New Jersey, Ortley Beach

Close up

This artist exploration came in to being when the storm Sandy hit the coast of New Jersey and my home town Ortley Beach got wiped off the map! The tragic loss of friends’, homes, lively hoods and businesses, began my trip down memory lane.

2m.Vara_BeachThese events made me think and connect to so many childhood formative experiences. This stimulated the newly created series of paintings and sculpture in retrospective to a people, lifestyle of the beach, ocean and boardwalk.

The story or line of thought for this piece-
11 years ago my father passed away. His last request was that we as a family make our last trek down the seacoast stopping at all the beaches, light houses, boardwalks and seaside communities, just as we did each year as children when my parents’ beach businesses season closed.
This trip not only ended up being emotional but magical-!
The bottle contents were acquired throughout the trip. The contents carry memories, emotion, and spirit. I assembled and chose them through meditation and chanting prayer. the upward piece is kinetic and moves.

the series has 7 completed pieces and 5 in the works  I will post pictures as I go so please stop back. Thanks

Just completed in time  for the opening reception- 9′ METAL bEAR SCULPTURE  made from lucky horse shoes and found objects, welded and left in rust.  His name became Ted in the last minuets of install so he could have a tag at the show. He is intended for exterior display and can (by clients choice) hold a lantern (electric) and or a mailbox. Then again he can just be enjoyed as a sculpture with no lantern and no mailbox- straight personality.

Thinking on Rabindranath’s Tagore writings-

Rabindranath’s writings – Book: Final Poems
Were translated into English by Wendy Barker & Saranindrath Tagore.

I found this so stimulating to think on-
The first intimation of this profound philosophical change in Rabindranath’s thinking can be traced to On My Birthday 20; here, he creates a remarkable image of language in process of losing its power of signification and sharply criticizes the view that language can uncover the nature of Being:

Today I imagine the words of countless
Languages to be suddenly fetterless-
After long incarceration
In the fortress of grammar, suddenly up in rebellion.
Maddened by stamp-stamping
Of unmitigated regimented drilling.
They have jumped the constrains of sentence
To seek free expression in a world rid of intelligence,
Snapping the chains of sense in sarcasm
And ridicule of literary decorum.

New Metal Sculpture Series

Currently there are newly 12 finished pieces of sculpture using recycled metal.
The largest one as of now is 3 foot.
I have many more drawings & ideas to solidify.
I have started collecting parts to expand the langue and dialog.
I spent a week taking the sculpture to different sites and photographing them.
The backgrounds I put them in were very interesting.
The process was an enhancement of my photographic skills and I got to look at the work from a new perspective. I have really enjoyed the focus and time spent. working Man Metal Sculpture

(Chicopee, Massachusetts)—The Borgia Gallery at Elms College will feature the work of miChelle m. Vara, titled inVoices, from October 28 through November 16, 2012. The artist’s reception will be held 12-2 p.m., November 16 in the gallery, located on the second floor of Mary Dooley College Center on the Elms College campus.

“I used an eclectic approach to abstract minimalism,” Vara said. “This work pushes the scope of dimension, and the finished pieces offer a visual smorgasbord that is as endless as my interests. Though metal and paint, I encompass the function and aesthetics of sculpture, to entice and challenge personal vibrations in a stimulating and fun manner.”

During the past 30 years, Vara’s work has won numerous awards and has been commissioned by a wide variety of museums, corporate, individual, and municipal clients.

Display will include newly completed works of jewelry, wall hangings and sculpture.
The exhibit will be on display 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily. The Borgia Gallery is located on the second floor of the Mary Dooley College Center on the Elms College campus.
